Self-sovereign identity: now that it's possible, it's inevitable

Humanity deserves digital identity that is permanent, portable, private and completely secure; in other words: self-sovereign. Shortcomings in the internet’s original design made this impossible, at a cost of trillions each year. Today, the invention of distributed ledger technology makes self-sovereign digital identity a possibility for the first time. Now that self-sovereign identity is possible, it’s inevitable. And it’s going to change everything. Leveraging the advanced capabilities of Sovrin, Evernym’s platform offers developers, solutions providers and systems integrators the tools they need to break down data silos, onboard users more seamlessly, and make trust a key value proposition. Deployed standalone or tightly integrated into an existing offering, hosted on premise or on our secure cloud infrastructure, Evernym’s smart agent software is the enterprise bridge to trusted peer interactions.

Vision: It might be difficult to understand relationship between Sovrin and Evernym. These are 2 different companies. Evernym supports Sovrin. The source code for Sovrin was donated by Evernym to the Sovrin Foundation, who then contributed it to the Linux Foundation to become Hyperledger Indy. So Indy is now a community open source project in the Hyperledger family, as open as Linux itself. Sovrin is  an open-standard, open-sourced protocol build for owners to controls his or her digital identity. According to Sovrin, digital identity is one of the oldest and relevant problems on the internet and the main reason why, it’s that we don’t have one standart way to verify digital credentials. Sovrin aims to l solve these problems with the use of blockchain and replace current online verification methods.

Product: Sovrin’s alpha version which was launched in 2017 successfully tested and now the platform is in an experimental beta version testing mode. This is a right way to make business and attract more investors by offering alpha and beta versions to investors. Sovrin is building a protocol for secure identities on the internet. Sovrin intends to use the blockchain to bring their  solution to life. Each public key will have its own information portal.  Each standardized information portal is referred to as a decentralized identifier (DID). DID  will let individuals to control the power of his data, information, and control who can access it. A DID is stored on a blockchain along with a DID document containing the public key for the DID.The identity owner controls the DID document by controlling the associated private key.  Anyone with a DID should be able to digitally issue and sign verifiable claims and other documents. With this DID solutions, there will be no need of companies, which stores all private information centraly. However, this project do not provide any roadmap to evaluate their progress and future development plans.

Team: Sovrin have a lot of people working with this project. 3 team members,  13 trustees and 9 Technical Governance Board members. All members are from different spheres and have a knowledge and experience on their positions. Also, we should remember that Evernym has a huge experienced team from all over the world.  So we have a lot of people working on this product and it brings trust that they will deliver their promises.

Token Strucure: The Sovrin token will be the main currency on  the platform and will help to facilitate built-in incentives for the privacy-preserving exchange of digital credentials.  Also, Sovrin token is designed to turn the Sovrin protocol into a digital marketplace for trust. With the Sovrin protocol and token, the value of verifiable claims can flow from verifiers to issuers, or indirectly from verifiers to owners to issuers. Team has not yet announced token metrics and they will upload technical white paper soon.
